Dubai’s About to Witness a Blood Moon

A total lunar eclipse is painting the skies red and here’s when, where, and how to make the most of it.

If you’ve been waiting for the universe to give you a show, mark your calendars: Dubai’s skyline is about to get a cosmic upgrade. On the night of Thursday September 7th into Friday September 8th, the city will be treated to a total lunar eclipse, aka the legendary blood moon. Yup, the moon is going full goth and dressing up in shades of red for the evening.

Earth is sliding right between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow across our lunar neighbour. The result: a celestial spectacle where the full moon slowly turns crimson as though it’s been dipped in rose-tinted ink. It’s moody, dramatic, and Instagrammable.

The whole dance unfolds in stages, penumbral, partial, total, and then back again, with the total eclipse lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. While you’ll see it with the naked eye, a telescope or even a decent pair of binoculars will turn it into a blockbuster experience.

The Dubai Astronomy Group isn’t missing out either. They’ll be livestreaming the eclipse with real-time coverage from around the world and are even planning a shot that captures the moon with the Burj Khalifa in frame. Plus, they’ll host a big public viewing event (details dropping soon on their socials).

Where to Watch the Blood Moon in the UAE

Al Sadeem Astronomy Centre, Abu Dhabi

This Al Wathbah-based centre is a stargazer’s playground, with guided tours and telescopes big and small. They usually run events for celestial milestones, so book ahead if you want an astronomer-approved view.
