Will Eid al Fitr fall on this Friday or Saturday?
News from the astronomical centre provides clarification as residents wait to see if they’ll be awarded a 4 or 5 day weekend.
The long month of fasting is nearly upon us, and residents of the UAE are avidly looking forward to the Eid al Fitr celebrations this weekend – the first long weekend so far in 2023.
So far, authorities are waiting on the sighting of the crescent moon to determine the date, which then determines the length of the long weekend. The UAE’s official moon-sighting committee will meet on Thursday the 20th to decide whether Eid will fall on Friday 21st of Saturday 22nd of april.
Islamic months last for 29 or 30 days, and this wholly depends on the first sighting of the moon. Various astrological centre said earlier that their calculations suggest the holy month of Ramadan will last for 29 days, therefore the most likely day that Eid will start will be on Friday.
“In most Islamic countries, we expect Eid to fall on Friday, unless it’s cloudy on Thursday and the Moon cannot be spotted. Generally, there is a 90% chance that Eid is on Friday,” said Mohammad Odeh, Director of the International Astrological Centre.
Rejoice, residents – this means a 4-day weekend is looking likely!
