Sheikh Mohammed approves new project to protect residents against future floods.
Rain or Shine, Dubai’s got it covered!
Dubai is gearing up for a major upgrade with the new 30-billion dirham ‘Tasreef’ project. Approved by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this initiative will boost the city’s rainwater drainage capacity by a whopping 700 percent.
The Tasreef project isn’t just big; it’s set to be the largest rainwater collection project in the region. According to the Dubai Media Office, it will cover all of Dubai and meet the emirate’s needs for the next 100 years.
With a capacity of over 20 million m³ of water daily, the project will ensure Dubai is ready to face any climate-related challenges. This initiative will significantly enhance the safety and security of UAE residents and citizens.
In a video on his official social media channel X, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that the exceptional weather in April taught us the importance of being more prepared for the future.
Sheikh Mohammed added, “Dubai will continue to enhance its infrastructure and urban achievements, ensuring the safety and security of everyone living within its borders.”
Work on the Tasreef project is kicking off right away, with full completion slated for 2033.
According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the unprecedented storms and torrential rain in April marked the heaviest rainfall in 75 years, surpassing anything documented since data collection began in 1949. It was the most rainfall ever recorded in a 24-hour period.
