UAE Flag Day is being celebrated this year on Friday 3rd November with a moment of commemoration at 10am.
This is the 11th year of the annual which encourages participation of residents and citizens alike. Here’s the lowdown on the event’s history…
UAE Flag Day was first celebrated in 2013 when HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai conceived the idea.
It marks the anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayhan’s accession as President of the UAE in 2004, and while this is commemorated every year, it is not officially a public holiday.
HH Sheikh Mohammed every year encourages all residents of the UAE, plus companies and education facilities to mark the occasion.
He wrote on X: “We call on all ministries and institutions in the country to raise the Emirati flag on the third of November at ten in the morning, simultaneously and with united feelings… and we call on all the people of the country to participate in this occasion.”
But make sure you’re careful of the strict laws around displaying your own UAE flag, which include checking the condition every 45 to make sure no damage has occurred, changing the flag to a fresh one every 6 months, and ensuring that it’s a rectangular shape with the height half the width and the colours in the correct order.
