Dai Pai Dong, nestled within the 5-star Rosewood Abu Dhabi on Al Maryah Island, is a gem that has been around since 2015 but deserves some renewed recognition. We revisited it recently to check if it was still one of our favourite Cantonese restaurants and it did not disappoint.
Upon entering, we were immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. The dining room, brilliantly decorated, allowed most seats to offer views of the busy open kitchen. Watching the chefs in action, cooking with woks, hand-pulling noodles, and crafting delicate dim sum, is an experience that truly stimulates the appetite.
Dai Pai Dong’s focus on modern interpretations of classic Cantonese specialties, such as homemade noodles, dim sum, and barbecued meats, is evident in every dish. The menu boasted an array of tantalising options, making it difficult to choose. However, our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with some fabulous recommendations. Her passion for the cuisine and attention to detail added a personal touch to the evening.We opted for the Cantonese roasted duck, barbecue pork char sui, Schezwan wok-fried prawns, and the flavorful yangzou fried rice, which included shrimp, chicken, and egg. Each dish was a masterpiece of flavours, showcasing the skill and finesse of the kitchen.
One aspect that caught my attention was the presentation of the cocktails. Served in brass jars to maintain their chill, they were as visually appealing as they were delicious. The combination of creative mixology and a diverse cocktail menu enhanced the overall dining experience.
What impressed me the most was the versatility of the venue. Whether you prefer to sit amidst the hustle and bustle near the chefs’ kitchen, immersing yourself in the energy of the restaurant, or retreat to a cozy nook for a more intimate dining experience, Dai Pai Dong caters to your preference.
Being on the Michelin guide’s selected list for Abu Dhabi ’23 is a testament to the quality and dedication of Dai Pai Dong. It is a restaurant that embraces the street food movement while elevating it to new heights. For a quick bite or a leisurely meal with friends, this laid-back and relaxed venue is the perfect spot.
