The Golden Visa just gets better and better!
All foreigners and expats were previously required to get a UAE driver’s license as per the RTA, and some were required to complete new local driving lessons and a knowledge road test. But this has recently been scrapped with the new ‘golden chance’ scheme, where applicants can more easily apply for a UAE driver’s license.
So depending on your home country, you can either simply convert your foreign license to a local one, or you have to withdraw or exchange your foreign license entirely to get a UAE version. A list of the countries exempt from taking the test can be found here.
As of Thursday 28th April this rule was changed and foreign license holders previously required to take lessons and a driving test can now easily apply to complete the road test from the RTA website, without completing those same driving lessons. What a dream! Not having to complete expensive and time-consuming lessons any further, although you must still take the test. For more information, visit the RTA website.
