What’s Next for Dubai? These Mega‑Projects That Are Redefining Our Skyline

Prepare to be duly impressed.

Dubai’s ever‑evolving skyline has long been a testament to the city’s ambition, from the soaring spire of the Burj Khalifa to the iconic sweep of Palm Jumeirah. Yet even amid such grandiose vision, the future appears brighter still: a total of seven ambitious mega‑projects are currently in the pipeline, each poised to further elevate Dubai.

Some are still in formative stages, others delayed or being refined, and all carry the potential to reshape the cityscape. Here, we unveil the upcoming developments that demand attention.

1. Al Maktoum International Airport

Transforming Dubai South into a true “aerotropolis,” the expansion of Al Maktoum International (operational since 2010) is nothing short of breathtaking. Phased development plans unveiled in 2025 project a facility five times the size of DXB, with the capacity to serve up to 260 million passengers annually. The blueprint includes five parallel runways, four passenger terminals, over 400 aircraft gates, and an underground rail system, all targeted for completion by 2050.

2. Dubai World Islands

Reimagining the globe into a unique archipelago, Dubai World Islands have long captured imaginations. Having lain dormant since 2008, the cluster reawakened in 2014 with the Heart of Europe’s debut. With developments such as a Danish-inspired hotel, a Maldives-style honeymoon islet, and the inaugural Anantara resort already open as of late 2021, the Islands promise a cosmopolitan retreat mere minutes from the mainland.

3. Palm Jebel Ali

Twice the size of its Palm Jumeirah cousin, Palm Jebel Ali was stalled for over fifteen years after 2008. Now revitalised by Nakheel, development has resumed, with residential compounds, beach clubs, resorts, and a “Celebration Village” on the horizon. When complete, the palm-fringed island will feature 16 fronds, 110 km of coastline, and homes for 35,000 families. Initial handovers are tentatively scheduled for 2027.

4. The Island (a.k.a. “Dubai Vegas Island”)

First announced in 2017 and initially planned to host the UAE’s first casino, this coastal development adjacent to Jumeirah is now proceeding without gaming. With MGM, Bellagio, and Aria hotels confirmed, along with waterfront restaurants, entertainment zones, and pristine beaches, the project aims to redefine luxury leisure. Industry reports suggest a 2027 opening for MGM Island.

5. Six Senses Dubai Marina

Select Group’s latest announcement promises to outshine all neighbouring towers: a 122‑storey residential tower set to become the world’s tallest tower of its type. Designed as a wellness sanctuary, the building will feature a hydrotherapy lap pool, a sound‑healing chamber, and thoughtfully curated environments via “Sleep With Six Senses” suites. Completion is expected in 2028.

6. Therme Dubai

Slated to open in Zabeel Park by 2028, Therme Dubai will loom at nearly 100 metres high and occupy over 500,000 sq ft. With the world’s largest indoor botanical garden, three cascading 18‑metre waterfalls, and interactive wellness spaces, the Dhs2 billion facility is projected to welcome 1.7 million visitors annually. Described by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed as “an iconic addition to Dubai’s skyline,” Therme is a testament to the city’s push into urban sustainability and leisure innovation.

7. Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park: Dubai’s Beacon of Clean Energy

Spanning 90 square kilometres on Dubai’s outskirts, the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park is a landmark project symbolising the emirate’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. Set to become one of the world’s largest single-site solar parks, it is a cornerstone of Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050. When complete, the park will generate 1,000 megawatts of clean power, dramatically reducing reliance on fossil fuels and powering homes and businesses with renewable energy. Its cutting-edge blend of photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power technology, combined with thermal storage, ensures energy availability beyond daylight hours.

These six projects – spanning aviation, hospitality, wellness, and urban design – signal the continued growth we’ve come to expect from our dynamic city.
