Dubai Metro Goes High-Tech

Drones to keep stations sparkling.

In a city that’s always looking to the future, Dubai’s public transport is getting a cutting-edge upgrade. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the use of drones to clean the facades of Dubai Metro and Tram stations, adding a sleek, high-tech touch to station maintenance.

The trial initiative, launched in collaboration with Dubai Metro operator Keolis MHI, aims to make cleaning operations safer and more efficient while supporting sustainability goals. These drones, equipped to spray down station exteriors, will reduce the need for workers to tackle tricky, high-risk areas, keeping safety standards soaring.

The RTA has been using robot cleaners like the one pictured since 2019.

While traditional cleaning methods still have their place, drones significantly cut down on manpower, trimming the team size from 15 to just 8. They’re also designed to be water-efficient—an essential feature in a city where environmental initiatives are always top of mind.

Mohammed Al Ameeri, Director of Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency, highlighted the innovation as part of Dubai’s commitment to smarter, safer urban mobility. “This pilot initiative reflects our commitment to adopting advanced technologies that enhance safety and sustainability,” he said.

As Dubai continues its journey to becoming a smarter city, drone-assisted cleaning is just one of many futuristic strides.

Whether it’s eco-friendly practices or next-level tech, the city’s transport infrastructure is always moving forward—one sparkling station at a time.
