Less Beef, More Reef: Sheikh Hamdan Launches New Project
The Crown Prince of Dubai starts a gigantic project in Dubai’s waters.
Dubai Reef, the world’s largest marine reef development project, has been officially launched by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The pilot reef modules mark the beginning of this monumental project, covering 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s waters. Over the next four years, Dubai Can’s sustainable initiative aims to create 20,000 purpose-built reef modules of various sizes, totaling over 400,000 cubic metres in volume.
“Dubai Can’s Dubai Reef project will inject vitality into our coastal waters and contribute to global conservation efforts,” Sheikh Hamdan said. “The project’s significant long-term environmental and socio-economic impacts will serve Dubai’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”
The Dubai Reef project aims to establish a lasting legacy by protecting marine life and promoting environmental sustainability in line with the UAE’s Green Agenda – 2030. Through the creation of Dubai Reefs, the project seeks to bolster biodiversity, safeguard coastal and marine habitats, support fish populations, and enhance ecosystem resilience.
