Everything you need to know!
The UAE is gearing up for a major travel game-changer—Etihad Rail. This ambitious project connects all seven emirates with plans to eventually link Abu Dhabi and Dubai in just 30 minutes! Let’s break it all down in a fun, quick read.
Passenger Service vs. High-Speed Rail
First up, there’s a difference between the two. The high-speed rail project is still in the planning phase, but the passenger train service is steadily rolling forward (pun intended). Currently, Etihad Rail is all about freight, but the passenger service will soon bring faster, greener, and more convenient travel options across the Emirates.
Once it’s operational, Etihad Rail expects to welcome a whopping 36.5 million passengers annually. That’s a lot of happy travelers zipping between emirates!
Where Are the Stations?
The first four confirmed stations are:
- Sakamkam, Fujairah (right in the city center!)
- University City, Sharjah
- Dubai
- Abu Dhabi
The full route covers 11 cities across all seven emirates, including stops like Al Sila, Al Ruwais, and Al Dhaid.
His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum tour a train on the Etihad Rail passenger service.
Travel Times That’ll Make You Smile
- Abu Dhabi to Dubai: 50 minutes on the national service or just 30 minutes on the future high-speed rail.
- Dubai to Fujairah: Also 50 minutes.
- Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: 1 hour 40 minutes.
- Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais: 1 hour 10 minutes.
Bonus: The UAE-Oman rail link will whisk you from Abu Dhabi to Sohar in just 1 hour 40 minutes.
What’s It Like Onboard?
Think comfort, convenience, and style. The passenger trains are designed by Spain’s CAF and will seat over 400 passengers. You can choose from economy, business, or first class. Expect:
- Spacious seats.
- Charging stations.
- Food and drink options.
- Entertainment systems.
- Top-notch air conditioning.
And did we mention the luxury vibes? Italian brand Arsenale is giving the trains a touch of Orient Express elegance.
The Sustainability Factor
Etihad Rail is a win for the planet. By 2050, it’s projected to reduce UAE road transport emissions by 21%. Each train journey removes 300 trucks from the road, slashing traffic and pollution.
Freight First, Passengers Next
While we eagerly wait for the passenger trains, freight services are already chugging along, transporting goods efficiently across the UAE. The freight network features 38 locomotives and over 1,000 wagons, cutting delivery times and emissions.

The official launch date for passenger trains is still under wraps, but it’s safe to say excitement is building. Stay tuned, and get ready to plan your seamless inter-emirate adventures.
