Authorities announce a plan to transform the city into a pedestrian paradise!
Dubai is taking strides—literally—toward becoming one of the world’s most walkable cities. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has officially approved the Dubai Walk Master Plan (Dubai Walk), a visionary initiative designed to turn the city into a pedestrian-friendly haven.
Some of Dubai’s existing places popular for walkers – Dubai Miracle Gardens.
Announced on December 7th, the ambitious plan features a sprawling 6,500km interconnected network of pathways, including:
- 3,300km of new walkways.
- 2,300km of revitalized existing routes.
- Completion slated for 2040.
But it doesn’t stop there. 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses will seamlessly link key neighborhoods, creating an unrivaled experience for both residents and visitors.
Bridging the Gaps
Among the standout projects are:
- Al Ittihad Road: A bridge connecting Al Nahda and Al Mamzar.
- Tripoli Street: A bridge uniting Al Warqa and Mirdif.
- Al Khawaneej Street: Linking Mushrif and Al Khawaneej.
- Dubai-Al Ain Road: Connecting Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubailand.
Landmarks, Meet Leisure
The Dubai Walk Plan doesn’t just connect neighborhoods; it also ties together iconic landmarks like Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina, and DIFC, enabling residents and tourists to explore the city’s best sights—on foot.
These aren’t your average sidewalks either. Picture lush greenery, shaded rest areas, interactive screens, and art installations, alongside sports zones equipped with workout gear.
Safe and Accessible
Prioritizing inclusivity and security, the pathways will feature:
- Clear signage and ground markings.
- Enhanced lighting for night walks.
- Integrated pavements with advanced navigation systems.
The Bigger Picture
This initiative comes on the heels of Dubai’s Urban Master Plan 2024, which includes:
- AED 3.7 billion for 634km of new roads over the next five years.
- 21 transformative projects across residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
- A forecasted population growth to 5.8 million by 2040.
